Por primera vez Alstom ha usado tubería de polietileno en lugar de hormigón para la toma de agua de refrigeración de una central de energía. Las ventajas de la tubería de polietileno residen en que es fácil de instalar en el fondo del mar y tiene una expectativa de vida de 50 años como mínimo en agua salada, mientras que la de las tuberías de cierta clase de hormigón es de alrededor de 25 años. La central de energía de ciclo combinado que funciona con gas fue construida en Fos-sur-Mer, en el sur de Francia, por CyCoFos, una empresa energética que es subsidiaria de Gaz de France.

Alstom has now used polyethylene piping instead of concrete in a power station’s cooling water intake for the first time. The advantages of polyethylene piping are that it is easy to install on the sea floor and has a life expectancy of at least 50 years in salt water compared to about -25 years for certain concrete pipes. The gas-powered combined cycle power plant was built in Fos-sur-Mer in southern France by CyCoFos, a power company that is a subsidiary of Gaz de France.
