Dairy farm hygiene gives better
milk and improves farmers’ income

Swedish based Electrolux-Wascator has launched a new range of industrial washing machines which are said to greatly increase hygiene during the milking process.
Following specifications laid down by the Danish food giant, MD Foods, the new machines use a special wash programme to prepare the cloths used to clean cows udders prior to milking.
This, says the company, not only considerably reduces contamination levels, which means higher income for the farmer, but also saves time and money in the wash process.

It is common practice in Denmark for dairy farmers to use special cotton cloths to clean cows udders prior to milking. These cloths are traditionally washed in a normal household washer-extractor and then placed in a bucket of hot water and chlorine which is used as a disinfectant. Before use, the cloths must be wrung out, a process which can be hard on the hands, arms and skin of the farmer.
Using a normal washing machine may appear to give satisfactory cleaning results, but according to Electrolux-Wascator, clogged filters can trap impurities which can contaminate the cloths. Another problem is that these machines are often too small for the task they are used for and prepared cloths are left exposed to the air prior to milking which can also be a source of contamination.
Electrolux-Wascator’s new CC range has a rugged stainless steel construction designed to withstand the tough climate of the milking room. The smallest machine has a capacity of 120 cloths and is suitable for farms with 40 cows or more. For larger farms, the range comprises machines which can wash up to 280 cloths at once.
Cloths are hot washed at 90°C and once clean, they are left in the machine until the next milking. About 30 minutes before they are to be used the machine is automatically activated and the chlorine disinfectant added in a concentration of 200 PPM. This is enough to act as a disinfectant, but the weak solution is less likely to irritate sensitive udders. The cloths are rinsed in and then heated to 40°C. The final stage in the process is extraction which leaves an exact amount of residual moisture in the fabric and the cloths are ready for use.
The exacting, automatic cleaning process means time savings, up to an hour a day say the manufacturer, and a longer useful life for the cloths. Improved hygiene levels also mean an increase in the classification of the milk giving higher returns for the farmer. The increase in income means that on an average sized dairy farm, the investment cost of the system can be recouped within around one to three years./ins
