Since the sinking of the Titanic the importance of watertight compartments on board ships has been realised in shipping circles. A constant problem is cable entries. Today there are often the same requirements for a seal within telecommunications and the building industry. The Swedish firm of Roxtec has, however, achieved a solution to the problem with its Rox System and multi-diameter sealing. And now comes the second generation with a new and much simpler sealing unit.

The firm, which has really taken the market by storm, was founded five years ago and has already taken more than 35 per cent of the world market for cable entries in modular systems.
- And there we should also note that the first year went on getting certification of the product regarding fire protection, water- and gas-tightness from the classification society, military authorities etc., says the company's marketing manager Karl-Erik Andersson.
- Today we have all the necessary certificates.

The modular system
The idea behind the firm's products is a module system of six basic elements, which can be adapted to every cable dimension. - A problem has at all times been that the cables never kept to the dimensions which were given in the specification. This problem is eliminated since our seals are adapted with a single intervention through one or more layers in the seal being able to be removed.
The six basic elements seal all cables from 4 to 98 millimetres in diameter. A conventional system requires at least 100 different seals within this range.
Through working in modular systems one can easily prepare for future new cables or dimensions.

New sealing unit
In the second generation Rox System the sealing unit has been developed further so that the time for final assembly is halved.
- Our new closure system is both simpler and safer. It can be placed anywhere in the entry, which makes accessibility greater and reduces the number of components further.

Changing market
The large market segments are shipyards and offshore and also telecommunications.
- But as our products become known we see a marked increase within the building sector. First of all for industries, laboratories, hospitals and hotels which for various reasons must be gas-tight and fireproof.
A special version, EMC Rox, in addition protects against electro-magnetic disturbances.

30 countries
Today Roxtec has distribution in about 30 countries, either through its own subsidiaries or distributors. The reference list contains many leading shipyards and telecom firms and other industries in Europe, North America and the Far East. Within the building industry the main centre continues to be in Europe.
- A sign that our products have won the confidence of the market is that we have hitherto not lost any client, says Karl-Erik Andersson.
