Fast-food restaurants kept clean
with taylor-made washer/extractor program

McDonald's Sweden has invested in new washing machines at 45 of its road-side restaurants.
The specially programmed Electrolux-Wascator WE 55 MP/FF washer extractors are used to launder the grill cloths used to wipe down frying equipment and work surfaces at what have been called some of the world’s most hygienic kitchens. Often heavily contaminated, these cloths have to be regularly laundered in order to maintain the cleanliness standards laid down by the company. But this presented technical difficulties for McDonald’s.
”Frying fat has a habit of clogging up waste-water outlets and eating up seals in washing machines”, says Björn Zandin, Technical Director at McDonald’s Sweden.
”But the Electrolux-Wascator solution appears to have eliminated the problem.”

The FF (fast food) version builds upon Electrolux-Wascator’s standard WE 55 MP industrial washer extractor which has found wide-spread use in many industrial laundry applications. In the fast food variant, the company worked closely together with detergent supplier, Diversey, to create a programme which not only got the cloths clean, but which also eliminated waste-water outlet clogging and frying-fat induced damage to seals. Although only a modest 50 machines with the new programme are currently in operation, the market potential is said to be enormous.
”If you take McDonald's as an example. The company is rapidly expanding around the world. In Sweden alone, 18 new restaurants were opened in 1995 with a further 25 planned for this year. World-wide the company opened 420 new restaurants in 1995 and the expansion is set to increase in 1996”, says Jörgen Svensson, Director of Sales at Electrolux-Wascator.
Björn Zandin agrees and says that the WE 55 MP/FF could well become a permanent fixture at all of McDonald’s restaurants in future.
”The machine solved a problem we’ve had for quite some time and I’ve recommended it to our sister companies abroad.”
The WE 55 MP/FF is not just a fast food outlet solution. The unit suits all medium sized, high through-flow restaurants where heavily contaminated items need to be washed./ins
