Stora Enso, together with Scandinavian partners, has developed a board-based müsli cereal package that eliminates the need for an additional inside air-tight bag. It is a product concept that guarantees air-tight qualities for such packages. One of the first commercial applications for the new concept has been launched by BioDoc of Sweden for its Magiform Müsli range.

This development is part of Stora Enso Packaging Boards' commitment to speeding up product development in the packaging board industry. The company has acquired shares in innovative companies in this sector and aims to increase the number of patents it files significantly in future. Some projects are being carried out in the company's own R&D centres in Europe and the US, with a staff of about 600, while other projects are being realised directly with innovative partners.

"It's no secret that we're quickly trying to find the best and most innovative packaging developers in the market. In such partnerships, we bring both capital and know-how, but on the other hand, we're expecting for commercial applications to rapidly enter the market. The development of this new type of müsli packaging is an excellent example of Stora Enso´s new way of acting," says Sales Director of Stora Enso Scandinavia, Joakim Stockhaus.

The packaging concept was developed co-operatively by Swedish packaging manufacturer Nord-Emballage and Stora Enso. "We had a goal to create suitable board packaging for cereal, müsli and powder products that would not require an air-tight inner bag," explains Director Ulf Jeppsson of Nord-Emballage. For this packaging solution, the companies bought an Italian Betti packaging machine. Nord-Emballage developed a package model that enables both moisture protection and an opening and closing system. Stora Enso provided High Barrier -coated Performa Natura CTMP board, which is suitable for taste- and odour-sensitive products. The board also has a good printing surface and allows good colour reproduction, thereby increasing the product's visibility on store shelves.

The development project took about two years, and the result was a packaging solution that works well for all kinds of müsli, cereal and powder products. Also, the whole packaging process is simplified through the elimination of a separate inner bag. The Swedish company BioDoc is the first to use the package for its Magiform Müsli cereal package. Their müsli, a functional food, is sold exclusively in pharmacies and health food stores.

"The health benefits of Magiform Müsli have been proven in clinical studies, and therefore the package should be able to preserve the contents as well as possible in its original condition for its whole year-long shelf-life. In addition to this, the opening and closing system is important so that the remaining portions are also preserved," explains BioDoc Product Development Director Carola Lindholm.

The package:
The package is manufactured using Stora Enso Performa Natura CTMP 275g board + 40g High Barrier -coating and packaged by the Swedish company, Packarna. Stora Enso and Nord-Emballage hold the patent for the package model. BioDoc, which markets Magiform Müsli, is a part of the Cerealia Group, one of the leading müsli and pasta products producer in the Nordic countries.
