A light and strong board case for photo CDs has been developed by Stora Enso Activation. The packaging solution is reported to offer costs savings coupled with a smarter image for brand owners. This novel packaging solution has been adopted by the leading photographic company, Fujicolor, for its photo CD service.

Photo CDs are a growing market for film suppliers. Offering a photo CD burning service is often combined with the supply of conventional paper photos. But the safe packing of photo CDs has proved to be a challenging task for major film laboratories. Fujicolor Sweden, for instance, supplies most of the photo CDs from its central laboratories to outlets, and over one quarter of the CDs are mailed directly to customers. This means that the traditional CD jewel box is no longer an acceptable solution as it breaks easily and is heavy, which increases direct mailing costs. For this reason, Fujicolor Sweden chose the DBS (Discbox Slider) manufactured by Stora Enso Activation. Despite its light specific weight, the case is strong, thanks to its special structure.

"Whether for delivery to film sales outlets or mailed to the customer's home, the case should guarantee an optimally safe environment for the CD throughout the whole logistics chain," points out Anders Hegart of Fujicolor Sweden. "Photo CDs are a special service and a high-tech product and the case should, therefore, reflect modern technology design."

DBS enables use of the whole case to support the brand image because all the surfaces can be multi-colour printed and given a variety of finishes. Marta Nyman, Product Manager at Stora Enso Activation, says that the added value offered by the DBS in branding support has been one of the decisive factors that leading customers choose it instead of the standard plastic case. "CD cases should stand out from the crowd if you want your product to be noticed. The dynamic look of the DBS, coupled with its economical advantages, has opened the market for us."
