Strong growth for ovenable board in the baking industry

Stora Enso has seen a strong increase in the demand for ovenable board in Europe. The baking sector is taking advantage of ovenable board´s benefits such as its versatile heating options, excellent printing properties and recyclability, the company states.

This growth is the result of long-term investments in product development and innovations within the baking industry. Lightweight ovenable boards have proven to be ideal as packaging for semi-cooked and frozen bakery products. They are suitable for heating up in a microwave or ordinary oven.

"The grammages of our ovenable boards have been reduced, machine development has been dynamic and digital printing has made it possible to print smaller batches of personalised trays. This has produced a challenging situation between ovenable board and competing materials," says Yrjö Aho, Marketing Director at Stora Enso Consumer Boards.

One of the pioneers in packaging development in the European bakery industry, JOWA AG of Switzerland, uses ovenable board in its frozen bakery products. The company, which belongs to the Migros Group, is the largest producer of bakery products and bread in Switzerland. The company has replaced aluminium with ovenable board in all its bakery products.

"Fibre-based material is simply more readily accepted by Swiss consumers than aluminium. We also wanted to be involved in developing a new generation of ovenable trays," says Horst-Ulrich Bonnhoff, who is responsible for packaging development at JOWA AG.

JOWA AG and the packaging manufacturer PAWI Verpackungen together developed an ovenable tray for frozen Quiche Lorraine -type products, which is used in 70 and 115 gram portion packages. Stora Enso's Ensoven PBT board is used for these packages. As a result of a long-term development project, JOWA has also succeeded in reducing the board grammages from 300 to 210 gsm.

"In terms of their technical properties, the 210 gsm packages are superior to the 300 gsm ones. The most important aspect for us has been the ovenable board's good formability and suitability for our machines. The board tray functions as a pie mould in the filling machines, as a package and as a heating tray. The demanding nature of the process - simply as regards temperature - must also be remembered, since the board must be able to withstand freezing to a temperature of approximately -40ºC at the bakery, after which the product is then packaged for retailing. The board must later retain its stiffness in the oven, even at temperatures of +225ºC," says Bonnhoff.

Besides frozen Quiches Lorraines, the company also packs cheese, spinach and mushroom pies in board trays. Ensoven PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) is designed especially for greasy bakery products, which must be easy to slide out of the tray after heating. Stora Enso manufactures ovenable board according to the customer's specifications, which also employs four-colour printing and various coating options.

Jowa AG belongs to the Migros Group, which is the largest retail group in Switzerland with an annual turnover of some SFR 18 billion, over 600 retail outlets and 75,000 employees.
