New high-tech features make SMARTON® ― the intelligent crane from Konecranes ― even smarter

/INS. The heavy duty overhead crane SMARTON is designed for demanding processes, assembly, and maintenance use. SMARTON lifts from 6.3 to 250 tons with a single trolley, and up to 500 tons with two trolleys. The intelligent crane has been adopted by many of the world’s leading industrial companies, because it offers the right mix of mechanical excellence, lifting intelligence, and service support. Konecranes has now further developed its flagship crane. The main focus of the updates lies on the improved user interface, facilitating the operation for crane operators, customer service crews, and customer management.

Latest generation of wireless technology

The new feature included in SMARTON consists of a tablet that considerably simplifies crane operation and maintenance. The new tablet technology works as follows: The customer receives crane and process information right to the tablet, so that adjustments to the crane and its operations are much easier. Optional camera views make load handling safer and more efficient. In addition, the SMARTON tablet also provides advanced real-time troubleshooting, usage, and condition data for the crane controls, which help in maintenance planning and take user experience to the next level. The SMARTON tablet is mounted inside the control cabinet during crane delivery. It is connected wirelessly to the crane control system from the factory floor level, providing advanced crane condition data in real-time for the maintenance personnel.

Smarter where it matters

Along with the renewed SMARTON, Konecranes has also worked on the Konecranes Smart Features and introduced brand new features that take safety to a new level. The software-based intelligence, Smart Features, available for the crane, offers control over material handling and brings concrete benefits to lifting processes by improving safety and productivity. The energy efficiency of SMARTON is maximized with optimized design, energy-saving Konecranes drives, and features such as the energy feedback system. Besides the already-known Sway Control, Protected Areas, Microspeed, Inching or Target Positioning that have proven their worth in practice, three new Smart Features, have been developed and integrated into the product family. The latest Smart Features, Snag Prevention, Hook Centering, and Active Sway Control, are available for the renewed SMARTON and help improve speed, accuracy, and the safety of customers’ lifting processes.

The new Smart Features in Detail:

Hook Centering is designed to eliminate side pull during lifting by positioning the bridge and trolley automatically directly over the load. This feature reduces the risk of hazardous situations. It also means less wear and tear on the crane’s components, faster load cycle times, and ease of operation.

Snag prevention is designed to stop all crane movement if the hook, sling, or load accidentally gets caught on something. This safety function reduces the risk of hazardous situations while moving loads and helps to prevent damage to the load, crane, and surrounding area.

Active Sway-Control is designed to dampen the existing load sway and to eliminate potential load sway. Sway Control allows faster load handling and more precise positioning. This indispensable feature also prevents damage to the load, crane, and the surrounding area.

Real-time Service

Real-time information comes from TRUCONNECT® Remote Services, a remote connection to the crane. TRUCONNECT Remote Monitoring provides visibility to crane usage and operating data, helping with decisions about maintenance investments and productivity. TRUCONNECT Remote Support offers customers 24/7 access to a global network of support centers, with crane experts and specialists available to provide remote support and troubleshooting in the case of a breakdown or indication of a fault.

Future-proof

SMARTON’s new control system and software architecture improve not only the flexibility of design, testing, and manufacturing, but also start-up and maintenance activities. Due to the standardized architecture, automation, remote services, and user interface, equipment is scalable and thus suitable for everything from assembly duty industrial cranes to heavy, demanding process cranes. The new software architecture won the Finnish Automation award 2015 in March.
