Bakery products are a new area for ovenable board. The low grammages of ovenable boards has been shown to be especially suitable for packing and heating semi-cooked bakery products. The Swedish company Pågen AB has launched a bun pack which utilises Stora Enso's Ensoven board.

Buns, baguettes and muffins are increasingly being purchased in packs which keep the product fresh for several weeks. Modified atmosphere packed bakery products can be quickly heated up at home or at work. Semi-cooked bakery products like these are mainly packed in aluminium or greaseproof paper. Besides new material options, the launch of ovenable board on the market also means additional properties for packaging according to manufacturer.
"The demand for semi-cooked bakery products has been on the rise in Europe, in spite of the fact that the conventional packaging materials used in the sector have lagged behind in development. Ovenable board offers new properties for packagers, for example in printing. It also gives consumers the freedom to choose how they want to heat bakery products," says Petra Cranston-Niukkanen, Product Manager at Stora Enso Packaging Boards.
Aluminium and greaseproof paper, the materials most commonly used in packing bakery products, do not give a printing surface that is suitable for four-colour printing. This limits the use of colours or makes it difficult to print the brand name on the side of muffin cases, for example. Ovenboard, on the other hand, opens possibilities for a good print quality. Aluminium packages, moreover, are unsuitable for microwave ovens, while the Ensoven PET board, produced by Stora Enso Packaging Boards, can be used in both ordinary and microwave ovens. Ovenable board is also recyclable and made from renewable raw materials.

CC Pack, which is part of the Å&R Carton Group, produces the trays for Pågen. The package contains 4 cinnamon buns which are packed in separate trays. The package weighs a total of 300 grammes. The semi-cooked buns are baked for 6-8 minutes in an oven heated to 200°C and packed in Ensoven PET board in which base board accounts for 210 grammes and PET coating 40 grammes. The board is available also in lower grammages, which makes it possible to produce an economical packaging option for different products.
