The successful launch of new products on the ready-cooked food market requires packages to be better designed and more functional. Many consumer groups are attracted by multi-compartment ovenable packages, increased use of colours and different shapes and digital printing. A number of new packaging solutions enabling the range of ready-cooked and frozen products to be considerably expanded have been developed as a result of the joint development work between Huhtamaki Van Leer and Stora Enso.

Upgrading of ready-cooked foods and launching of new products requires intense investment in development by the entire packaging industry. Conventional ovenable trays will be joined by new types of packaging solutions.
"Packages comprising five to eight separate compartments are already in use in Japan. In Europe there can be used a construction with separate compartments for first course, main course and dessert (a muffin for example). Multipacks, which are part of American food culture, are also going to gain popularity in Europe," says Business Manager Jussi Rautiainen from Huhtamaki Van Leer.
The colour scheme, design and printing techniques for ovenable trays will be changing. Colours that go with particular food products and oval or round shapes are ways in which companies can influence the consumer's choice. Digital printing will also make a breakthrough in ready-cooked packages. It will make it possible to design special packages, for example, for particular areas or towns.
Stora Enso emphasises the environmental impacts of packaging materials. "The renewable raw material of ovenable paperboard gives food companies a clear environmental profile. Board tray is also cost efficient and prevents unnecessary material consumption," says Product Manager Petra Cranston-Niukkanen from Stora Enso.
PET-coated Ensoven board tray produced by Stora Enso is an alternative to plastic and aluminium based trays. The company manufactures PET-coated paperboard in grammages of 190-420 g/m2. Thanks to its fibre structure, Ensoven is easy to mould, which is useful for converters. Four-colour pictures and product information can be printed directly onto the board, which means separate labels are not needed. The board enables savings in materials and the lighter package also reduces transportation costs and packaging waste.
