New cosmetics packaging product family launched - Stora Enso sets its target on being the leading material supplier

Stora Enso, Europe's biggest paper and board manufacturer, is launching a new product range for packaging cosmetics. The product family comprises the SBS boards Ensocoat and Ensogloss and FBB boards Printocart and Printocart Luxe, the latest addition designed exclusively for the luxury packaging industry. Stora Enso has also built a strong technical support and service concept around the new range. The company's goal is to be the leading material supplier in its chosen product segment. The new product family will be launched in October at the luxury packaging fair in Monaco.

The cosmetics market constitutes a business worth 50 billion euro annually in Europe, with Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain accounting for more than 80% of sales. In addition, sales of European cosmetics products to the United States and Asia are significant business.

"We have raised our capacity for cosmetics packaging board and built a strong service concept to support our customers," says Pan-European Coordinator and Sales Director for the cosmetics product family, Mr. Alain Piattier from Stora Enso France.

"Our cosmetics packaging boards Ensocoat and Ensogloss are the whitest on the market and are, thus, eminently suitable for products where the unprinted surface of the board itself remains visible. Printocart and Printocart Luxe, on the other hand, offer very high smoothness and are ideal for products where the whole surface is to be printed over. In the world of cosmetics and luxury packages a good printing surface is not the only requirement, though. The finishing properties are also decisive for the choice of material."

The whiteness of Ensocoat and Ensogloss should guarantee a good print contrast and consequently a high quality visual result. These boards also have good UV radiation resistance, and, due to their internal bond strength, can withstand considerable stress without breaking, the company states. Ensocoat is a one-side coated SBS board, pigmented on the reverse side. This means that the reverse side can also be printed, for example, with instructions or with other marketing material. Ensogloss is two-side coated and is suitable for very demanding applications where uniform printing properties are needed on both sides of the board.

Printocart and Printocart Luxe are reported to have excellent strength and stiffness, which makes them especially well suited for applications where the smoothness of high quality board is needed and where the printing ink will cover the whole surface. Printocart Luxe is a new product designed exclusively for the cosmetics and luxury packaging industry, where convertibility of the board is a prime asset. The smooth surface of the board is stated to be ideal for hot-foil laminating.

Stora Enso's cosmetics packaging materials can be printed by offset, flexo or rotogravure techniques. In the cosmetics business, sheet offset is the most commonly used method, but with Ensocoat and Ensogloss digital printing is also possible. After printing, a wide variety of finishes and other special effects can be applied including water-base dispersion varnish, UV varnish, hot stamp foil, embossing, metallic ink and laser die cutting.
