The new insulation cup developed in co-operation by Huhtamaki and Stora Enso Consumer Boards has been well received by airlines. Paper cups and other fibre-based containers have a key role in modern inflight catering concepts in which functionality and recyclability are emphasised. Both Huhtamaki and Stora Enso are expecting increasing demand for paper cups now that air travel is returning to a growth course.

Popularity of snack food is challenging the packaging industry. New types of packs are needed to attract busy consumers. The Langnese-Iglo Micro-Baguette launched on the German market this spring is an excellent example of the new trend in smart packaging, where technology and design go hand in hand. The package won first prize in the TIDA 2003, Trayforma International Design Award competition organised by Stora Enso.

An expanded range and a focus on strengthening its business through international collaboration are supporting Stora Enso's strong growth in graphical boards. The use of the company's Aurocard board for the covers of IKEA's catalogues is a powerful example of this increasing market. This year 132 million IKEA catalogues have been printed and are forecast to rise by tens of millions within a few years.

The beginning of May marks the introduction of new manufacturing standards and quality control systems at Stora Enso's Baienfurt plant in Germany. It is believed to be the first mill in Europe to base its folding box board manufacturing on the stringent hygiene and quality standards normally found only within the pharmaceutical industry that meet European Directives for Good Manufacturing Practice,GMP.
