Catering packs for airlines are the latest end-use applications of Stora Enso's ovenable boards. The annual value of the airline catering business is some EUR 3800 million of which packaging accounts for a considerable percentage.  Airlines are now interested in the recyclability and printing properties of the packs, which is creating demand for new packaging solutions. The most recent examples of innovative packaging are pizza packs made of Stora Enso's ovenable board, which are used on KLM's and Northwest Airlines' intercontinental flights.

High quality meals served in the cabins provide an important competitive edge for airlines. Therefore both small and large food and drink producers are interested in international routes - aircraft cabins being one of the most popular reference markets for their products.

Increasing focus is being placed on upgrading packs, with the aim of making them serve passengers and airlines better. The new pizza pack for airlines does just that. The use of ovenable board has not only made hygienic and safe packaging possible, but also introduced good printability and recyclability introduced as additional properties.

"Airlines can print their own logos and content information directly onto the pizza packs using four-colour printing, without the need of separate labels. Ovenable board enables new design solutions, as it is easy to mould. Airlines are also interested in the recyclability of board, as it reduces the amount of waste fees they have to pay. In addition, the surface of ovenable board does not become as hot as the surface of aluminium," says Yrjö Aho, Vice President of Stora Enso Packaging Boards.

Miedema, a packaging printer in the Netherlands, manufactures pizza packs for the Sabatasso Group, which supplies pizzas to Supplair. Supplair sources suitable products for airlines and also tests the safety of products and packs. The normal heating time for pizza packs is 20 minutes in an oven heated to 170 oC, but to be safe the pack must be able to withstand a longer heating time at a higher temperature.

The pizza packs have been designed to fit into the special-sized ovens used on the aircraft - six packs on each baking sheet. Pizza packs are currently supplied to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Northwest Airlines, which use them on their intercontinental flights.
