Short-cut to client-server networks
Users planning to migrate from traditional IBM systems to modern client-server environments make up the major target for Telepartner’s new bridging solution. The product provides remote access to a wide range of system platforms via local area networks (LANs).
The company is now releasing version 4.0 of its Remote Vision software, which connects portable and remote desktop PCs to LANs based on either Token-Ring or Ethernet. The platforms supported include Windows NT, LAN Server and UNIX, as well as IBM mainframe and AS/400 systems through emulators. Connectivity options include X.25, direct dialing – also by GSM-data – and ISDN.
Most other network connection solutions on the market are based on hardware/software ”routers” that are purchased in increments of four-eight lines. These units function like switchboards and contain routing tables that are set up by specialists who define the optimum data paths between computers in connected networks.
”But a bridging solution like ours needs no network gurus,” says Aadne Grimsgaard, Telepartner’s International Distributor Manager. ”And its performance equals or exceeds that of routers because of our filters and compression techniques.”
He explains that the product’s various software filters do away with the usual ”handshaking” between nodes and provide their own routing capability. This cancels much of the router technology’s speed advantage over bridging solutions. In addition, the company’s Dyna-Flash data-compression module can improve average performance by up to 70 per cent, according to Mr Grimsgaard.
Remote Vision is an all-software solution that runs on a standard operating system and PC hardware. New functionality can therefore be added without hardware upgrades. Since the system can handle up to 64 simultaneous users, Telepartner claims that this product will be the overall lowest cost solution in very many cases./ins
