Master - a new submersible drainage pump

PRESS RELEASE
December 19, 1995
New submersible drainage pump offers
high capacity, high head capability

A new, heavy duty submersible drainage pump from Swedish-based Grindex is set to fill a gap in the growing 8 to 10 kW pump market. Called the Master, it is available in three versions; regular head (N), high head (H) and high volume (L) (L will be released later in 1996). An important feature is the built in Star-Delta starter which eliminates the need for a separate starter unit and cumbersome cables. The pump also comes with a built in motor protection system, SMART (Surveillance of Motor And RoTation) function which senses phase failure, phase sequence, direction of rotation and temperature fluctuation shutting down the pump until the fault has been rectified.

The Grindex Master is part of the company’s New Line range of submersible drainage pumps filling the gap between the Major and the Midi and is designed for dewatering mines and drainage operations on building sites. The pump can be reconfigured on site for either high-discharge (70 m/50Hz and 80 m/60Hz) or high capacity purposes (3,300 l/min 50Hz and 3,400 l/min 60Hz) by changing certain hydraulic parts such as the diffuser and impeller.
A special feature is the built in Star-Delta starter which eliminates the need for a separate starter unit and cumbersome cables. This makes the unit easy to handle on site while reducing costs and improving reliability.
The SMART (Surveillance of Motor and RoTation) function monitors the pump’s operation from the first second it is switched on. Making up SMART is Rotasense which ensures that the pump only works in the proper direction of rotation. Incorrect phasing means that the pump will rotate in the wrong direction greatly reducing output and also creating excessive wear. Phase Guard, which stops the pump in case of phase failure and automatically restarting it once the fault has been rectified. Temperature Guard breaks the current if the motor temperature should exceed 130oC (the stator is class F, 155oC).
Like all Grindex pumps, the Master also features a patented air valve which allows it to be dry run without damaging the motor. A valve opens automatically when the pump starts to ’snore’ allowing air to freely circulate around the motor and keeping the seals, bearings and motor cool. As water re-enters the pump the valve automatically closes and it is now water cooled.
Weighing around 60 kg, the compact pump, which is supplied with a 20 meter long cable and phase shifter/on-off switch, is easily handled and installed. Standardized parts provide a high degree of spares interchangeability between different pump versions allowing distributors to keep stocks small without the risk of running out of the most asked after parts./ins

About Grindex
Grindex was established in 1940 as a manufacturer of grinding equipment for the building and mining industries. The company’s first submersible drainage pumps were introduced in 1960 offering customers dry running capabilities in a comparatively light-weight unit. The grinding equipment operations were sold in 1980 allowing Grindex AB to concentrate on consolidating its range of pumps. This comprises two pump series; dewatering and sludge pumps in sizes ranging from 1 to 50 horse power. The company sells through a distributor network in some 50 countries with 90 per cent of its current output sold on export. Turnover in 1994 was SEK 100 million. The company employs 85 people and has offices in Sweden, the United States and, most recently, Singapore.
