The established plastic CD container used by music business has got a major challenger. The Swiss company PAWI Verpackungen has introduced a packaging solution called DataPac. Made from board, it is designed for CDs and DVDs used in the software and music industries. Lower weight and good printing surface are reported to be the product´s main properties. In Europe, for example, AOL and BlueWin (Swisscom) have already adopted this packaging innovation. The cases are manufactured using Stora Enso's Performa and Ensogloss board.

There are a number of reason why DataPac is gaining market share. Promotional or information material required by the customer can be easily printed onto the case surface eliminating the need for additional plastic lids or packaging film. With a 50% lighter specific gravity, mailing costs of CDs and DVDs are substantially reduced.

The challenge to plastic cases by DataPac and DataDVD, which are 100% board, comes after five years' market research and product development by PAWI Verpackungen. During this period the company has developed six basic designs for various applications. Each basic design can also be tailored to the customer's requirements.

Communications media
"DataPac functions, above all, as a communications media, as all the surfaces of the case can be exploited for advertising or information purposes. The case protects the disc inside it efficiently, but its weight is only half that of boxes made of plastic. This means that it is particularly suitable for direct marketing and mailing," says Stefan Kleine-Möllhoff, Product Director at PAWI.

All instructions for software products or music titles can be printed straight onto the case, and no additional labels or inserts are needed. The case also has a simple opening and closing system. Whether for software or for music products, the case makes it possible to create a cost-effective consumer experience. Soon after market launch, DataPac was adopted by AOL in France and Germany and by the internet-media company BlueWin (Swisscom). The music industry has also exploited DataPac, and various promotion campaigns have been carried out using the case. The DVD case won the SwissStar 2001 award for its excellent design and marketing concept.

Stora Enso's Performa Natura and Ensogloss boards are used in CD and DVD cases. These grades have proved to offer a good printing surface, while ensuring a durable packaging solution, even at low grammages. Good runnability is also a crucial factor, as the volumes involved are large. Stora Enso has been actively engaged in developing new applications for packaging board with its partners.

"This is a new application area for board, and it shows that a competitive innovation is well able to alter packaging concepts in the software and music business. The rationale for using board lies first and foremost in its marketing value, which attracts a variety of designers.
