Bulk beverage carbonation system increases efficiency and reduces costs
The scene has been repeated countless times at every carbonated beverage fountain: just as a line of thirsty customers appears, a CO2 tank goes empty. Serving is slowed or stopped as employees go through the cumbersome process of exchanging tanks and adjusting hoses. A carbonation system has been introduced in Europe to eliminate this situation by providing an uninterrupted bulk supply of pure carbon dioxide with no attention from fountain employees.
The easyCARB system from Taylor-Wharton Division of Harsco Corporation is a permanent installation that is periodically refilled from a truck carrying liquid CO2 in bulk. Because there are no cylinders to be filled, transported and attached, the system offers efficiency advantages for both beverage service operators and gas distributors.Higher Efficiency, Lower Cost
The bulk system provides significant savings in labor costs and space requirements to beverage service operators. Models are available in sizes appropriate to the smallest convenience stores; restaurants, hotels, pubs and fast food stores; and the largest public stadiums or amusement parks.
Because the need to change from empty to full cylinders is eliminated, quality customer service can be assured with almost no employee attention. Risk of employee injury is also reduced because there is no need to move heavy cylinders back and forth between storage and fountain positions. Storage space can be used for other purposes.
The gas delivery trucks are specially designed for efficient operation in the narrow streets of Europe, and fountain service can continue without interruption while the system is being refilled through a fillbox outside the building. During routine operations there is no employee involvement with the carbonation system.
Simplifies Distributor Operations
"Bulk carbonation allows gas distributors to increase efficiency and reduce labor costs while providing their customers with better service and a better product," said Dr. Christian Haverkamp, Taylor-Wharton's European sales manager. "Asset requirements are ultimately lower, allowing distributors to achieve greater market penetration from the same capital resources."
Operating costs are reduced because the high capacity bulk system reduces visits to each customer location by as much as 80 percent, the company reports. There is no need to repeatedly transport, clean and refill multiple cylinders. Typical installations are refilled once every three weeks, as compared with two or three visits each week to customers using traditional CO2 cylinders. Reduced handling means there is less risk of product contamination, and the system's stainless steel vessels are not subject to rust.
