New metro car combines good operating economy and a high degree of comfort

A new metro car – Vagn 2000 – is now being launched on the international market. The ride is very comfortable and the noise level is low, according to manufacturer Adtranz Sweden. Passengers are informed about the current station via electronic signs and loudspeakers.

The car is effectively insulated against sound and the wheels are designed to damp noise from the track.
“This, combined with low motor and compressor noise, reduces the noise level well below that of today’s metro trains”, says Mats Holgersson, Adtranz Sales and Marketing Manager for the Nordic area. “The axles adjust automatically to the curve radius, which gives a very smooth ride, with a low level of vibration in floor and fittings.
“The air in the compartments is filtered and in cold weather it is preheated. The windows are double-glazed for good heat and noise insulation. The interior is light and airy, with textile-covered seats, and the lighting is antiglare. The free floor space gives plenty of room for luggage.

414 passengers
A train set may be made up of one, two or three cars. Each car can take 414 passengers in all, with 128 seated. Each car is in three sections connected by links, and passengers can move freely through the entire car.
The car is made of stainless steel and the driver’s cab of reinforced plastics. Almost all the material can be recycled. The car concept, including the design of wheels and bogies, is based on advanced technology. Vital systems are duplicated for maximum safety.
“Vagn 2000 is currently under trial by Stockholm metro operator SL, which runs a very large metro system in international terms. SL has bought 75 cars and has an option on 125 more”, says Mats Holgersson. The results of the trial are excellent.
