High-reliability cranes provide timber handling solution for Europe's showcase sawmill

Loglift Jonsered cranes optimised for continuous use are playing a key role in the efficient operation of one of Europe's largest-ever wood processing plant investments - Binder Holz's newly-opened sawmill in Kösching.

Binder Holz is one of the largest producers of glued solid wood products, and is investing around 150 million Euros in this new wood processing plant - the most advanced of its type in Europe. The initial stage of the project is a sawmill and planing plant with a capacity of approximately 1.5 million solid cubic metres of raw timber per year, which is delivered to the plant from forests up to 120 km away. Further investments will extend the site's capabilities to include a combined heat and power (CHP) power station running from biomass, as well as a production facility for glued-wood building products.

Four stationary cranes from Loglift Jonsered's J1220SR range were chosen for the plant's log handling requirements. Two are sited in the wood intake area and are used continuously, to sort the logs and ensure they all oriented in the same direction for processing. A further pair of cranes are sited on the saw line, and are used for positioning adjustment and dealing with problems such as jams.

As the new plant has been designed for high volume production and multi-shift working, a key parameter in the selection process of the cranes was reliability and durability. Binder Holz knew from previous experience of at its plants in Austria, that Loglift Jonsered cranes are designed with very conservative operating margins, and selected the long-outreach 1220 crane which offers a lifecycle of two million cycles. This crane has a high specification hydraulic system, and unique design features on the base, lower pillar and boom arm to provide strength and durability.

The automation system-builder Reichert Reiner Hydraulik-Service integrated both pairs of cranes into the Binder Holz production areas, adding remote controls to enhance productivity. The wood intake cranes are controlled remotely via hard-wired joystick modules. The cranes on the saw line are also operated remotely via radio links, via video monitors in a control room. Wireless operation allows operators to move to the site of the cranes, to deal with any difficult handling issues such as jams on the feeding line.

Commenting on the crane selection, Martin Henne, Managing Director of Binder Holz, Koesching noted: "I had used Loglift Jonsered cranes before on similar handling projects, and had a very positive experience. So, for this project we didn't consider other makes".

"We're delighted to be part of such a significant investment, which is creating one the most modern wood processing operations in the world", notes Hermann Lambertz, Loglift Jonsered's project coordinator. "We already provide a substantial share of the equipment used by the Bavarian and other forestry owners that serve this Binder Holz plant, as well as the mobile cranes used on the timber trucks. This prestigious installation means that Loglift Jonsered is present at all stages of the wood process - and is a showcase for the breadth of our organisation's capability". /ins
