New mobile satellite equipment
PRESS RELEASE
November 30, 1995
Faster and cheaper outside
broadcast transmissions with
new mobile satellite equipment
It is now possible for TV and radio stations to set up and start OB (outside broadcast) transmissions from anywhere in the world within 10 minutes and at a quarter of the previous cost. This is what is being offered by the Swedish company Wahlberg and Selin AB with their new digital satellite transmission equipment. Known as ‘Swe-Dish', the company's DSNG (Digital Satellite News Gathering) equipment, is compact enough to be carried in an ordinary car. Combined with a high degree of user-friendliness, this makes it both simpler and cheaper to make direct transmissions of news, sports, current events, and other OB activities.
‘The low cost and ease of transport opens up a lot of new possibilities for broadcasters', said Johan Widlund, News Producer for the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation, which tested the equipment. ‘For sudden news-breaks, the equipment can be got ready for direct transmission by one person without the help of production technicians in less than ten minutes'.
What is called the satellite link means in fact compressed digital transmission of sound and pictures via satellite. In technical terms, the equipment meets both MPEG-2 main-level/main-profile and DVB, which provides compatibility with the new digital TV technology.
The whole kit fits into two portable flight cases, and is therefore easy to transport by passenger car, civil aircraft, helicopter, etc.
‘Swe Dish has been developed to be simple to use without loss of transmission quality', explained Per Wahlberg of Wahlberg and Selin AB. ‘With a design based on new technology, satellite transmission costs are drastically reduced. This opens up new possibilities for small and medium-sized production companies and operators to make their own transmissions from the field'.
The company's clients include Swedish Broadcasting Corporation, Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Swedish Space Corporation, Teracom, and a number of commercial TV and radio operators./ins
