Investments in Product Safety System Reduce Contamination Risks

Stora Enso's Baienfurt mill is the first European box board producer to gain accreditation by the German RWTÜV for the introduction of stringent risk assessment systems normally applied in the food industry.

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, HACCP, is a system designed to ensure minimal risk of contamination in food related products. This move is part of the mill's major efforts to set stringent standards for board manufacturing that meet the latest requirements of food and pharmaceutical manufacturing. HACCP system was implemented in June and carried out in parallel with the introduction in May of new manufacturing and quality standards that meet European Directives for Good Manufacturing Practice, GMP.

Many benefits
"There are many clear benefits for our customers. They include enhanced product safety, quality security, better process control, comprehensive documentation and product traceability," says Doerthi Stauber, project manager at the Baienfurt plant.
"HACCP at Baienfurt has been approved by the internationally recognised German accreditation body, RWTÜV," points out Doerthi Stauber. "All of our products and procedures, also conform to the internationally recognised DIN EN ISO 9001 quality management and ISO DIN EN 14001 environmental standards."
To meet the rigours of HACCP, the mill undertook a comprehensive analysis of the plant operation and identified areas where measures were needed to minimise potential risks. This included the introduction of new hygiene and product handling procedures, installation of improved dust and particulate control systems, and zoning of manufacturing area to reduce the likelihood of cross-contamination.
As part of Stora Enso Oyj, registered in Finland, Baienfurt produces virgin fibre board and fully coated, lightweight folding box board for a range of packaging applications. Stora Enso is one of the world's major forest product groups with business interests in magazine newspapers, newsprint, fine papers in addition to packaging boards.
