Waste treatment using pure oxygen
Recycling turns waste into usable products

On March 25, AGA AB, one of the world's leading companies in industrial gases, signed a co-operation agreement with the Swiss company von Roll Umwelttechnik AG.

The core of the agreement is von Roll's new innovative process for thermal waste treatment, which in all parts is based on combustion using pure oxygen instead of air. Compared with existing processes, the use of oxygen offers a number of advantages, such as improved energy efficiency, significantly reduced flue-gas volume and better process control.
An essential feature of the new process is a high temperature oxygen-assisted melting and refining unit in which the slag and ashes produced are converted into a "clean" product. This product is equivalent to natural pozzuolana and can be used as such, i.e. as an ingredient in the production of cement.
Through this co-operation agreement, AGA's gas technology will form an essential part of von Roll's new process. A demonstration plant with a capacity of 6 tonnes an hour of waste is now being erected on the premises of Bremerhavener Entsorgungsgesellschaft mbH (BEG). It is to be operated by von Roll during a test phase lasting a couple of years. The plant will be taken over by BEG and put into commercial operation only after meeting specified performance data,
AGA will secure supply of oxygen and other products during the test phase through its German subsidiary. Upon successful completion of the test phase, they will build an on site industrial gas production plant.

The Sweden-based AGA group has subsidiaries covering some 40 countries in Europe, Latin America and the USA. In total, the group has 10,000 employees and its turnover amounted to about USD 1,800 million in 1995.
