Ruukki’s special steels for a light, durable tipper body at Tip-ex 2014
/INS. Ruukki, a leading manufacturer of wear-resistant Raex and high-strength Optim steels, will be exhibiting at the Tip-ex 2014 fair on 29 – 31 May 2014. Use of Ruukki’s special steel products in customer applications translates into more value using less material. For the customer, this means lighter vehicle structures that save energy, reduce emissions and prolong life cycles in applications requiring wear-resistance.
Ruukki has an excellent product range of special steels to meet the needs for light structures of all tipper body manufacturers. Optim is an extra high-strength structural steel designed for customer applications utilising the high structural strength of the steel to deliver increased end-product payloads which in turn saves on fuel consumption. Optim is available in a wide range of grades, all with excellent bending, welding and cutting properties. Raex wear-resistant steel with very good welding and forming properties has been engineered to provide a longer useful life for applications facing constant impacts and wear.
Laser-welding enables sheets of different thicknesses and also different grades of steel to be joined together to a maximum width of 4.5 m – i.e. one strip formed by laser welding Raex and Optim together. One benefit of this is that end-product weight can be minimised for optimum performance according to body design.
“Use of components made of Ruukki’s special steels provides wear resistance for side and bottom panels and high strength for the structural parts to create a light, durable structure for tipper bodies. The good bendability of Raex and Optim enables curved design with fewer parts, supporting structures and weld seams for streamlined production processes, significant cost savings and lower CO2 emissions in service,” says Tony Harris, Vice President, Sales Western Europe & Africa at Ruukki. “We help tipper body manufacturers to develop optimal end-products and work with them to design new applications for steel, whilst providing them with additional benefit of technical and application support.”
Ruukki not only takes energy efficiency into account in production processes and investment decisions, but also in the manufacture of special steels. This is how it enables customers to make energy-efficient machinery and equipment. Ruukki ranks among the best in the world in iron-making CO2 efficiency. The carbon raw material consumption of our steel production is close to theoretical minimum with current technology. Ruukki’s carbon dioxide emissions are almost 250,000 tonnes lower than the steel industry average across the EU.
