Stora Enso Packaging Boards has introduced PartnerWeb, a real-time software system that lets customers track the product order and delivery process via the Internet. Early customer acceptance of this web-based business resource planning system has encouraged the company to launch a more comprehensive version of the software in the autumn.

This web-based business resource planning software automates routines and frees up resources for consultative customer work and product development. The system is said to cover all the basic operations of supply chain management. PartnerWeb's features will be further enhanced through supporting interactive use. Alongside the system's basic English service, new language versions will be available in German, French, Spanish, Finnish and Swedish. The new version should appeal to a wider group of customers.
The users are currently made up of large companies in the packaging sector. The first such customer was the Huhtamäki Group. The forest industry and its customers are interested in switching their recurring order routines to the Internet to make their supply chain management more effective. According to Stora Enso Packaging Boards, the launch signifies a fundamental change in business dynamics based firmly on future needs. It appears that the clientele has welcomed the change: International packaging giants including Huhtamäki, TetraPak and Elopak have become PartnerWeb users.

Improving the supply chain
"PartnerWeb is an added-value service for customers who want to increase the effectiveness of the supply chain. In a way, it's a window to the whole process, which includes order handling, storage capacity, after sales service, statistics, logistics and invoicing. In addition, each customer can personalise their own page, so that they can find reports and the information they frequently require quickly," explains Kirsi Viskari, eBusiness Manager at Stora Enso Packaging Boards.
The Huhtamäki Group's Southeast Asian mills were the first to adopt the system. According to Lawrence C.W. Lam, Manager of Purchasing Operations from the company's Hong Kong office, the system's user-friendliness has enabled a speedy introduction. He says training for the Hong Kong, Chinese and Malaysian teams lasted two days, after which PartnerWeb was taken into daily use.
"The system is good and user friendly. I can check all the necessary information regarding the supply chain. It's also important to me that I can do the checking when it's most convenient for me," says Lam.
Guaranteeing information security for customers has been an important aspect in the development. All data is transferred in an encrypted format and customers' profiles are behind two firewalls. Customers can only access information related to their own profile because the user groups connected to the system and the related I.D.s and passwords limit the permissible areas of use.
