Strong becomes stronger:
New surface coating method makes timber flooring more durable

Thicker layers of surface coating are not the only way to achieve more hard-wearing flooring. After several years' intensive development work the wood flooring manufacturer AB Gustaf Kähr has succeeded in producing a very strong surface coating - a thin layer that withstands scratches, abrasion and other hard wear. The new surface coating gives the boards at least 50% better wear-resistance compared with earlier UV surface coatings. The result has been confirmed in abrasion tests at SP, Sweden's Institute of Materials Testing.

The wear-resistance of a natural flooring such as oak, beech, maple, birch or other parquet flooring can be increased by applying thicker layers of surface coating. However, there is a big risk the flooring will seem plastic and unnatural under so many layers of surface coating. Consumers choose wood flooring because they want real wood, with the maximum feel of wood and the minimum of nonrenewable material. With their new surface coating, Kährs have succeeded in increasing wear-resistance significantly without increasing the amount of surface coating.

Environmentally friendly
The new surface coating - just like the old - contains no solvents or formaldehyde. This makes the surface coating environmentally friendly both in the finished flooring and during production.
Even though the new surface coating provides very high wearresistance, it can still be sanded in the same way as before. The new surface coating can also be recoated, which is very difficult and in some cases impossible with the socalled EB coatings. That makes the new surface coating especially beneficial for flooring in rooms subject to heavy wear, such as halls.
A few years ago socalled electron beam curing (EB), a new curing technique for surface coatings, appeared on the market.
Kährs spotted the disadvantages and did not adopt the new method, a decisive factor being its requirement for a lead encapsulated system due to the hazardous radiation involved with EB.
The advantages of the UV surface coating were greater, so the company chose to develop it instead - a decision not regretted today.
