It will now be quicker and more efficient for American manufacturers of corrugated board to apply tape directly in the corrugator. This follows from the release by the Swedish company AssiDomän of the Wellpack Taper, its successful tear tape applicator, onto the American market. The unveiling will take place at the industry exposition, SuperCorrExpo 2000, in Atlanta at the end of October.

- Tear tape is the best way to open a box and is used more and more frequently, asserts Johan Bergman, key account manager. Thus production efficiency is important. None of our competitors has a machine that applies tape as quickly or accurately as ours. The machine can start at speeds of up to 300 meters / minute with a precision of +/- 0.5 mm. Once production is underway, we can push it up to even greater speeds.

Further advantages are said to include the possibility to switch tape rolls under operation, which minimizes waste production at start-up and shutdown. Optional equipment includes a PLC control system and a web following system (where a camera monitors that the distance between the tape and the edge of the paper under production is the same regardless of lateral movements in the paper). It is also possible for the machine to apply reinforcing and double-sided tape. Moreover, the machine can be equipped with a scribe that cuts partway through the outermost layer of paper, so that the edges tear cleanly when the box is opened with the tear tape. This is important, for instance, in packaging used to display goods on the retail floor.

According to sources at AssiDomän Förenade Well, the company has sold some 50 machines throughout Europe establishing its sound reputation.
- The price varies between 100,000 and 300,000 USD, explains Johan Bergman. Most of our customers make their initial investments back after one year, but we have seen cases where the investment is paid off after just four months.
