Swedish indoor air cleaner makes breakthrough in Hong Kong
Two engineers from Jardine Technical Services in Hong Kong have recently spent a fortnight in Sweden learning all about a sort of mini-tank, a robot weapon in the war against dirt. It travels down ventilation ducts and uses a patented method for cleaning them to improve the quality of indoor air.
Poor indoor air quality in air-conditioned buildings often leads to allergies and other health problems for the people who have to use them. The main causes of poor air quality is dirty ventilation ducts, and the Swedish company Wintclean Air AB has developed a simple and effective method for duct cleaning. Now Jardine Technical Services has purchased one system from Wintclean, and intends to use it to improve indoor air quality in Hong Kong.
The device, Bandy II, is a small, remote-controlled vehicle which can crawl down ducts and inspect them using a miniature video-camera. It can also be fitted with various types of brushes for cleaning ducts of circular or rectangular cross-section, or with tools for blast-cleaning interior insulation, as well as degreasing greasy ducts. For smaller ducts, the ‘Scrubber' brushing machine is used. And the dust remover Wintvac with its micro-filter then gets rid of all the dirt that Bandy and Scrubber loosen off from the ventilation ducts.
When the patented cleaning process was exhibited at the 1993 Hannovermesse, there were over a hundred enquiries from 38 countries regarding distribution rights. Today, there are distributors in Germany, Holland, Spain, North America, and South Korea. ‘We believe that our technology could have considerable significance for the improvement of air quality in air-conditioned buildings in Hong Kong', said Mr David Wong Director and General Manager of Jardine Technical Services.
Jardine Technical Services employs around 600 building services technicians to look after the technical requirements of prestige property in Hong Kong. It also has establishments in mainland China, Macau and Taiwan.
The device is manufactured at one of Sweden's centres of technical excellence, Karlskoga, with antecedents going back to Alfred Nobel, creator of the Nobel Prizes.
