Compact vibration meter with remote control capability
PRESS RELEASE
February 13, 1995
Compact vibration meter with remote-control capability
The UVS 1500 vibration meter from the Swedish company ABEM Instrument AB comes with remote control capability as an option. Using a modem and new PC-based software, users can monitor and collect reports from an unlimited number of instruments anywhere in the world.
The UVS 1500 is part of a series of three vibration meters which is complementary to the company's traditional range of geophysical instruments.
The UVS 1500 is a 4 to 8 channel instrument for measuring both ground vibrations and airborne shock-waves. It can measure maximum vibration velocity as well as full waveform, and can work unattended for over a month.
The PC-based package UVS Remote makes it possible to collect data from blasting or other sources of vibration directly on a desktop computer. The package consists essentially of software and a 14,400-baud modem for each PC and instrument.
It is claimed that an unlimited number of instruments can be connected, and connection by telephone network means that instruments can be located virtually anywhere. Data transfer can even be via mobile telephone. For the present, the system is adapted for the analogue North European NMT standard, but adaptation to the digital GSM network is expected in the near future.
Compact 4-channel instrument
The UVS 500 is a smaller 4-channel instrument which can be fixed to the foundations of a building or other similar object which needs to be monitored. The instrument registers and stores in its memory the maximum vibration velocity occurring within each two-minute interval. It is capable of continuous unattended operation for a full month.
Of the instrument's four channels, the fourth can be used to store the true resultant of channels 1 - 3. Alternatively it can record air over-pressure or sound level (85 - 145 dB or 55 - 115 dBA) using an optional microphone.
Top of the range
The 8-channel UVS 1608 is the company's most advanced instrument. Its period for recording vibrations and pressure waves can be as long as 20 seconds. The 5000 Hz sampling frequency is claimed to give data of very high quality for analysis. The results are displayed on an LCD screen, and can be output via a built-in printer or saved to disk on an external computer.
A number of different sensors can be connected. There is also inbuilt signal processing capability for differentiation, integration, etc. of recorded signals.
