Worlds first integrated multimedia comminucation display
PRESS RELEASE
15 February 1996
World’s first integrated multimedia
communication display launched by Nokia
New from Nokia is the MediaStation, the world’s first monitor to offer integrated video camera, microphone and loudspeakers in a single unit. Aimed at the rapidly expanding desk-top video conferencing and video communication market, the monitor uses codec audio and video software to enable entry-level video telephony. High-grade sound and vision reproduction is achieved through Nokia’s NVC 100/120 video conferencing hardware codec using a coding system which complies with the ITU-TH.320 standard. Video and audio transmissions can be delivered either through Local or Wide Area Networks (LAN/WAN) or ISDN dial-up networks.
”The MediaStation’s all-up design brings video confer-encing to the desktop without taking up more space than a normal monitor and without the mess of extra cables required for stand-alone speakers, microphones and cameras”, says Helge Tiainen, Vice President, Multimedia Communication Displays.
The monitor can be turned a full 175 degrees allowing images other than the user to be viewed by the integral video camera. This small PAL, autofocus unit, which has been mounted beneath the monitor screen to allow for an optimum viewing angle, can be adjusted up or down by 5 degrees.
Audio components include an in-built amplifier with sound compensation and front panel mounted stereo speakers delivering a 2 x 1.5 watt output. There is a headphone socket jack for private audio communication while audio sound level and balance is adjusted via on-screen menus. The Media-Station’s microphone has been mounted on top of the monitor reducing the problem of ambient noise disturbance caused by paper or keyboard chatter.
The 17 inch monitor is one of the first in its class capable of displaying a 1280 x 1024 resolution with a picture refresh rate of 85 Hz. The monitor’s MicroEmission technology complies with the TCO 95 Standard and a PowerSaver function not only saves energy, but also prolongs the life of the monitor as it automatically switches to standby when not in use. The MediaStation is compatible with PC and Macintosh operative systems and complies with all available Plug & Play concepts.
