Software utilities allow users
to work between different programs
and operating systems

The European release of two utility software packages for Windows 3.1, 95 and NT is announced by DataViz Inc. The utilities allow files to be copied between a Macintosh formatted disk and a PC, and support thousands of file translations between different word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics programs.

Widespread use of personal computers in business and the
home has resulted in the need to use files and disks interchangeably between different programs and operating systems.
MacOpener Version 1.0 and Conversions Plus Version 3.5 allow Macintosh and PC users to work between programs such as PageMaker, Microsoft Word and Excel. MacOpener 1.0 allows users to read, write and format Macintosh floppy disks and other removable disks in a PC, as well as read CD-ROMS.
Among the many removable drives that the utility supports are SyQuest, Bernoulli, Zip, Sony Re-writable (Magneto-Optical), Macintosh Hard Drives and CD-ROM. A "preview" feature makes it possible to look at Macintosh text and graphic files (EPS or PICT), and retrieve important file information such as file formats, before copying the files to and from the PC.
The same functions, plus a full file translation library are incorporated in Conversions Plus 3.5. Jeffrey Fetchick of DataViz Sales and Marketing, states that this software supports thousands of file translations between the most popular word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics programs; including the latest versions of Microsoft Word and Excel, WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3, etc.
Users can work with Macintosh removable media and
CD-ROMS in their PC's, and convert files back and forth between different programs. Entire directories and sub-directories can be converted in a single operation, rather than file by file. Both products include an optimized 32 bit version and support long file names for Windows 95 and NT.

The Trumbull, Connecticut, USA, based company, founded in 1984, has been built on the need for file and disk compatibility software utilities. DataViz has been the recipient of many industry awards for its products; most recently the MacWorld World Class Award for "Cross Platform Connectivity." In 1994, Apple Computer Inc. licensed the company's MacLinkPlus for its System 7.5 upgrade kits as well as for the PowerBook and Performa computers.
