Chinese language mobile phone launched

A mobile phone with a Chinese character set menu is launched at Expo Comm China ’96 by Benefon Oy.

The Benefon Betacs Gold features a large graphic display with clear characters and visibility.
The software guides the user quickly through the many functions with the aid of symbols. These include calling the most important phone numbers by hitting one key, and the ability to send and receive numeric messages during the call or through the built-in pager.
An optional feature of the pager is the Outgoing Voice Message. When called, it will repeat the phone user’s greeting or message to the caller. They can then key in their own number, ready for the user to call back when convenient. This saves the added expense of an external message service or a separate pager.
To help keep vital appointments, the phone also includes a time and date display and an alarm clock.
For maximum portability, the phone features three different battery options (380mAh NiCd, 650mAh NiMH, 850mAh NiMH), a pocket sized battery charger and a portable kit giving hands free operation. Together with the 380mAh NiCd battery, the unit weighs no more than 197g. With the 850mAh battery, standby time is up to 23 hours with a talk time of 80 minutes.
The phone’s advanced power management system provides correct capacity information; high speed one hour charge; intelligent charging and discharging for extended battery life; and battery change during conversation.

New accessories for Benefon Mobile Phones
BeneWin is software for management of mobile phone memory locations. It consists of a program disc and an adapter. The Windows-based program allows the user to create, edit and sort a telephone memory file as well as adjusting ringing tones, lights and timer functions with a PC.
Maestro is a new feature within BeneWin software. It allows the users to easily compose their own individual ringing tone melody for the Benefon mobile phone. BeneWin Maestro is also available for the Betacs Gold mobile phone.
Portable hands-free kit for mobile phones consists of an earpiece and a microphone headset. Ideal for couriers, boat users, forest workers, field engineers or others whose hands are occupied and who need the flexibility to move around. A call is answered by hitting any key on the phone. The earpiece has been designed to avoid any disturbance with traffic background noise./ins
