High-efficiency dehumidifier unaffected by ambient temperature

The Swedish company Munters has developed a new type of dehumidifier, the MDry 150. The new dehumidifier is characterised by its high capacity and ergonomic design. Furthermore, it is reported to be one of the more lightweight dehumidifiers on the market. In contrast to cold condenser dehumidifiers, the new product can be used in both hot and very cold environments. The dehumidifier will probably be used primarily within the sanitation industry, but it could also be of use to the building industry and the private market for summer cottages closed up for the winter, in crawlspaces and on boats.

High capacity and an ergonomic design were two of the important demands made of the new dehumidifier. According to its specifications, the dehumidifier has a capacity of 12 kg per day and an energy requirement of around 800 W. The ergonomic requirements have led to the dehumidifier being rectangular, which makes it easy to carry at the side of the body. It can even be carried using a shoulder strap for those who need to keep their hands free to use tools, for example.

"We have taken our lead from the requirements placed on tools by the people who use them professionally," says Jari Kekkonen, the development manager at Munters. "We have therefore designed the dehumidifiers so they can be transported in stacks on top of each other without slipping off. All extruding parts on the dehumidifiers, for example the plug and the switch, are recessed to avoid being damaged during transport."

The dehumidifier is based on the sorption principle, which means it can be used in both hot and very cold environments. According to the manufacturer, it is capable of working at temperatures as low as -20°C. Dehumidifiers which use the condensation principle cannot be used at temperatures lower than +10°C.

The new dehumidifier can also avoid those problems that affect heating fans when warm, damp air is attracted to adjacent areas of cooler, dry air. This problem can lead to the damp creating additional problems in other parts of the building.

"Our method sucks humid air into the dehumidifier, where the moisture is absorbed from the air current. The humid air is then expelled from the room," says Kekkonen. There are two expulsion nozzles to choose between for the dry air. One has a diameter of 50 mm and can be connected to a side channel fan. The other is 100 mm in diameter and is connected when the dehumidifier's built-in fan is to be used. With two nozzles and an adapter, no extra attachments are required for different dimensions.

The MDry 150 is primarily intended for use in the treatment of damp, building and other professional operations, where it is necessary to control the level of atmospheric humidity. The company is convinced that there is also a private market where the dehumidifier can be of use. One example is crawlspaces, which often create serious damp problems. Summer cottages closed for the winter can also have damp problems that can be avoided using the dehumidifier. The equipment produces no more noise than your average kitchen extraction fan.

Munters has a European service network, which includes not only its own service centres, but also those of its partners. The dehumidifier is designed to make it easy for users to replace the filter themselves and to carry out simple service measures.
