Punctured tyres survive tough German high-speed tests after repair

Punctured and subsequently repaired tyres of the two most commonly used types in Europe for motorcycles and scooters have survived comprehensive high speed tests carried out by TÜV (Technischer Überwachungsverein) in Germany, with good results. Four popular types of car tyre were also tested and were driven problem-free after nail punctures had been repaired by using the same method. The car tyres were in addition subjected to an extra long test while under load. Two of the Safety Seal repair methods were thus proved to pass this recent impartial testing.

Many tyre specialists consider motorcycle and scooter tyres impossible to repair properly. This is a widespread impression, and means that the absolutely most usual type of puncture, caused by a nail or similar object, becomes a very expensive business for conscientious owners, who often feel obliged to change the complete tyre.
"The test results show that a correctly performed repair can also be done on this type of tyre, thereby causing some controversy," says Sven Möller of Safety Seal Europe AB i Sverige, the European agent for the American "Safety Seal" system.
The TÜV in Germany is an impartial testing institute, renowned for its integrity. The branch therefore considers its opinion to really matter in tyre testing, even though similar test facilities are available in most other European countries.

The following tyres were tested at speeds between 100 km/h and 270 km/h:
Michelin Pilot Primacy 215/55R16 V 93, Continental Eco Contact CP 195/65R15 H91, Metzeler MEZI 180/55ZR W73 (motorcycle) and Pirelli SL36 130/60R13 J (Scooter).
The test method used was exactly the same as that employed by tyre manufacturers to test their tyres in order to gain approval for marketing within the European Union. The car tyre test standard is ECE 30, and for two-wheeled vehicles is ECE 75.
Tyres are tested at 80% maximum permitted load.
The car tyres were, as an additional test, run for 8000 kilometres at 130 km/h.
Two tyres of each type were tested, since "Safety Seal" manufactures two different products, one for repairing nail holes without removing the tyre, and the other to repair the tyre from the inside after removal.

Both methods passed testing on all the tyres. There was no sign at all of any of the repairs being unstable when the tyres were dissected after completing the tests.
