New clothes for cleanrooms protect both products and man

Growing use of cleanrooms in various industries and tougher demands on purity, have created a need to develop more efficient protection. For this purpose, research related to cleanroom clothing, conducted by Finnish company Laitosjalkine Oy, has now been completed. The result is new concept, called Laja Clinigo, that includes shoes and garments that protect workers, products and production processes against air impurities and uncontrolled electrostatic discharge (ESD).

The clean room clothing concept evolved from a development project called 'Risk management in cleanrooms'. In addition to Laitosjalkine Oy, several garment producers, cleanroom users and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland have contributed to the project. The project's aim was to develop cleanroom clothing that also fulfils user preferences.

Approximately 80 percent of all particles in cleanrooms derives from people working there, one person can release up to hundred thousands of particles per minute. A person in motion also generates static electricity, the uncontrolled discharge of which can result in severe damage to both products and production processes in a cleanroom.

Thanks to new material and clothing solutions the Laja Clinigo shoes and garments can manage electrostatic discharge efficiently. In addition, the clothing sustains washing and maintenance, and has good particle linting properties. Special attention has been paid to user comfort and the material's breathing properties.

The use of cleanrooms is increasing world-wide and is spreading to new industrial branches. At the same time, cleanroom purity demands grow tougher and tougher, due to developments, for example, within micro electronics and biotechnology. Against this background, Laitosjalkine expects success for its new products in markets world-wide.

The new cleanroom shoes and garments will be introduced at the Medica Fair in Düsseldorf this November.
