Coffee-to-fly increasing demand for paper cups
The new insulation cup developed in co-operation by Huhtamaki and Stora Enso Consumer Boards has been well received by airlines. Paper cups and other fibre-based containers have a key role in modern inflight catering concepts in which functionality and recyclability are emphasised. Both Huhtamaki and Stora Enso are expecting increasing demand for paper cups now that air travel is returning to a growth course.
Finnair is the first European airline to have introduced the 250 ml double wall "Cuppoccino". This insulation cup type is suitable both for special coffees such as Cappuccino and Latte, and soups. The embossed surface is reported to give the cup optimum insulation and heat retention properties coupled with an upmarket look and feel.Finnair uses four different paper cup designs for serving cold and hot beverages. "The paper cups have worked very well in our catering concept. They should be high quality, easy to use, durable and environmentally friendly. Recyclability is a key issue that we consider in all our material selections," says Samuli Pukki, Purchaser of Finnair Catering Oy.
Paper cups enable space saving stackability and easy handling and serving. They ensure good hygiene, have proven to be safe to use and light - a bonus which is appreciated in the flying business. "Good printing properties are also vital, as airlines use cups as brand tools in their promotions," points out Kim Aganimov, Group Vice President, Huhtamaki.
Huhtamaki uses Cupforma board in the Inflight cup range. The board has been a highly successful product for Stora Enso in recent years, as the coffee-to-go trend, new end use applications (such as soups, desserts and promotional use) and the consistently strong fast food business have kept the demand for cups buoyant.
"Coffee-to-go is one of the most important factors contributing to higher demand for cupstock world-wide at the moment. Cups for airlines are a continuation of the trend to consume coffee and soft drinks in high-quality paper cups," says Seppo Kiiski, Vice President, Stora Enso Consumer Boards.
