Laboratoires Industriels de Vichy (LIDV), a member of the L'Oreal group, is now using Stora Enso Packaging Boards' Ensocoat board. With the new packaging concept, Vichy now has a board with the utmost purity and brightness to protect its skin care products. The company will use Ensocoat in all its board packages.

The Vichy product group is one of the best known brands in skin care cosmetics. The products are sold in pharmacies and drugstores in over 70 countries. The company has now completed the process of revamping the packaging of its entire product line. With the new concept the appearance of the packages is now more in harmony with the brand: image of purity and a scientific development. At the same time the package design has been simplified, and all the consumer information is now printed inside the package. Stora Enso Packaging Boards's Ensocoat packaging concept has also passed rigorous laboratory, transport and consumer tests.
"The brightness properties of the board have to be of very high quality. It's also important that the board has the right light tone, and that it remains the same from one batch to the next. The tone of the board is monitored consistently both by our laboratories and by the converters," says Henri Deschaume and Frédéric Munoz, who are in charge of purchasing at LIDV.
LIDV and Cosmetiques Actives Internationales (CAI) of France have also tested the effect of light on the board. UV tests were used to find out how the material reacts to light when the package is stored on an open shelf. These tests found Ensocoat's resistance to yellowing to be excellent in comparison to other SBS boards.
Another important factor for Vichy is the information function of the package. The front of the package should project the image of a high quality product, and therefore the print must be of a high standard in order to meet Vichy´s brand image. The board also has to have good printing properties on the inside of the package, where the product information and the instructions for use are printed in several different languages. This also means that the package should open easily at the corner, to ensure that the consumer gets the information she needs.
"The Ensocoat package allows us to dispense with a separate information insert for the Vichy products, which has simplified the packaging process," says Alain Piattier, Sales Director of Stora Enso's Packaging Boards (France).
The new concept has been well received by the market, as shown by a consumer survey commissioned by LIDV. Ensocoat also passed transport and storage tests. Of LIDV's 100 million products manufactured annually, about 60% are packaged in board.
