Carant Antenn AB - Company presentation
Business concept
To develop, produce and market antennas and accessories for wireless communications and the car industry.
Short history
The company was formed in 1969 in Stockholm by Hungarian-born Veronica Cramner and her daughter Ketty. During the first few years, only car-radio antennas were manufactured. The police were the first major customer and today there are Carant antennas on all Swedish police cars. At the beginning of the 1970's, the company gained its first major contract with the car industry. This was signed by Volvo. Several years later, Carant entered the new and fast-growing telecommunications market and signed a contract with Ericsson.
Today Carant is a global supplier of antenna products and systems to leading producers of wireless telecom systems and car manufacturers as well as distributors and retailers to the mobile, cellular market.
Products
The product-range consists of antenna solutions for fixed and mobile communication. The majority of products are customised. The range covers a wide spectrum of network standards including NMT, AMPS, D-AMPS, GSM, ETACS, PCN, TETRA, PCS and DECT.
Product development
Product development takes place in close co-operation with the company's key customers; the telecom industry, car manufacturers and distributors. Twelve per cent of the company's annual turnover is allocated to research and development. The company has an ISO 9001 certificate since 1995.
Environment
Since its foundation, the company has source-sorted, recycled and destroyed waste-products from manufacturing. Carant complies with the environmental rules laid down for leading manufacturers of wireless telecom systems and car manufacturers in relation to choice of materials among others.
Ownership
The Cramner family is the majority owner of the company.
Organisation
Business is divided in five areas: Mobile (antennas mounted on vehicles), Mobile Terminals (antennas for mobile telephones and computer applications), Fixed Wireless (antennas for fixed, wireless communications; used in countries which need fast implementation of telecommunications), Reliable (equipment for the improvement of telecoms systems, e.g. earthing) and Defence (antennas for the armed forces).
Most of the company's production takes place in Enebyberg outside Stockholm. All construction and development work also takes place on this site. Some manufacturing is carried out by sub-contractors to increase flexibility.
Market
The market is composed chiefly of the world's major telecommunications suppliers. The market for vehicle antennas is serviced by distributors in the majority of European countries as well as Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. The Swedish car industry is also an important market segment.

The budgeted turnover for 1997/98 is SEK 70 million (approximately £5 224 000). Exports account for the majority of this total.
