New antenna series has
universal mounting
Giga Line, a new series of antennas for car phones, is being introduced on the European market.
According to the manufacturer, Carant Antenn AB, of Enebyberg, Sweden, it is the only one with a universal mounting. The same roof mounting can therefore be used for transmitter antennas for GSM, NMT, or DCS networks.
The mounting is made from surface-treated light alloy, and is claimed to be fully corrosion resistant, ensuring long antenna service life and good overall economy.
The antenna mounting can be fitted permantly to a vehicle roof (Giga Top), held in place with a magnetic foot (Giga Mag), or cemented to the windscreen (Giga Glass).
‘Fitting of the roof antenna is quick and needs no special tools’, says Roland Hägg, Marketing Manager of Carant Antenn AB. ‘Simple fitting makes life easy for retailers, and the universal mounting allows for flexible warehousing of transmitter antennas’.
No damage to paintwork
Only 6.5 mm depth beneath the vehicle roof is required for fixed antennas. Magnetic or glass mounting are alternatives if drilling holes in the roof is undesirable. The adhesive mounting is claimed to have excellent holding characteristics, and the magnetic foot has a soft mounting washer and so does not damage paintwork. According to the manufacturer, glass mounting is easy enough to be carried out on a do-it-yourself basis. All system components (cable, contact, mounting, and transmitter antenna), are matched for best results.
‘Differences in reception quality and coverage between manufacturers are negligible from the user’s point of view’, explained Hägg. ‘Choice of antenna is therefore often based on how it looks, or how long it’s going to last, which makes design and mechanical construction important for us’.
The important target group for the Giga Glass and Giga Top models is the service vehicle sector. The Giga Mag, which is easy to remove, is aimed more at the private vehicle owner, who will then be able to use a mobile phone away from the vehicle, while on holiday, for example.
‘There are many advantages in using an external antenna’, explained Hägg. ‘Mobile phones can be connected to hands-free systems, and the driver can keep both hands on the wheel while telephoning. Sound quality and coverage are also better with an external antenna, and any possible effects of radiation from the mobile phone’s built-in antenna on the user’s head are eliminated’.
Carant Antenn AB is certificated to ISO 9000, and is one of the largest Swedish manufacturers of quality antennas for mobile telephony. The product range includes vehicle, terminal, and system antennas, as well as accessories to the international standards MNT, AMPS, GSM, ETACS, PCN, DCS, PCS, and DECT./ins
Captions:
1. The Giga Glass antenna is firmly cemented to the windscreen. The series also has two other variants, one permanently mounted on the vehicle roof, and the other with a removable magnetic mounting.
2. Sound quality and coverage are better with an external antenna. Any effects of radiation on the head are eliminated when the antenna is outside the vehicle.
