Swedish pioneer launches new tool for system development

PRESS RELEASE
February 24, 1995
Swedish pioneer launches
new tool for system development.

With the launch of Objectory 3.5, the Swedish company of the same name continues its worldwide crusade towards solutions for object-oriented system development. The new product, like its predecessors, adds an engineering-oriented view to system development.
‘Our aim is to make life easier for the end user. That demands a holistic approach to system development, with an analysis technique starting from the user viewpoint', says Objectory Marketing Manager Sten Jacobson.

He compares system development with building a house: the foundations come first. But the foundations cannot be dug until the rest of the house has been designed. Sten Jacobson calls this ‘top-down' thinking.
The first question that must be asked before a new system is created is ‘what services is the system intended to offer its users?' The answer to that question defines the requirements on the system:
‘Objectory's analysis technique ensures that the end product will be exactly what the end-user requires' explains Jacobson.
The company operates two steps behind the front line. Objectory does not develop end-user systems, but the means to design and build these systems.
‘We supply a product which helps the system designer to analyse, then design, build, and maintain the system', Jacobson states.
The product consists of a work process with associated computer support. Objectory sells systems which are in turn used to develop demand-oriented systems for end users. System designers are the direct clients, end-users indirect.

More complete systems
The new Version 3.5 offers the system designer a product that is more flexible, more accessible, and more complete, according to Jacobson.
This version differs from its predecessors, especially in giving support for all models and diagrams, including state transition diagrams. Support is also provided for configuration management and version control. Hard coded documentation and code generation has been replaced by customer-controlled template driven generation, and Version 3.5 tools integrate more easily with other tools.

Advocating paradigm shift
‘With the new version, we are taking one more stride towards the object-oriented paradigm-shift in system development, which is something we have been working towards for a long time', says Sten Jacobson.
Objectory's founder, Dr Ivar Jacobson, led the way internationally towards object-oriented system development. His message is unequivocal:
‘End products must be user-friendly and more market-oriented. This demands using object technology, starting from user requirements. This is the approach in which we specialise'.
Dr. Ivar Jacobson was first in the world to describe techniques for object-oriented design and business process re-engineering (BPR).
'We are pushing the maturity process in the software industry, where users and systems people often speak different languages. Our technology makes it easier for them to speak the same language -- the language of the user. And it is for the user that the system should be built' concludes Jacobson.
