Popularity of Swedish gingerbread biscuits rising take-off at ISMfor further expansion
More and more gingerbread biscuits are being exported from Annas Pepparkakor AB in Sweden. 70 years after its foundation the company is now the world's largest manufacturer, producing over 2 500 tons annually. This is the equivalent of an impressive 500 million gingerbread biscuits. Half of these already go to international partners in a couple of dozen markets. The giant Swedish department store IKEA is one of those who have contributed to this export success.
At this year's Internationale Süsswarenmesse-ISM different flavours and packaging specially adapted to European markets are being presented. The European grocery chains Edeka and Eurospar are two examples of those who believe there is a greater potential market for this traditional Scandinavian Christmas speciality.
Gingerbread biscuits have been part of the Christmas tradition for a very long time. Their great success, in the USA among others, means however that Anna's gingerbread biscuits are becoming a year-round product. In that market alone, over 500 tons are sold annually.
The Swedish presence at ISM is intended to further raise the level of interest in gingerbread biscuits abroad.
Annas Pepparkakor can offer almond, orange, lemon and mint chocolate flavours, as well as the original 1929 recipe. It is hoped to introduce the popular Swedish pastime of building gingerbread houses on to an international market. By providing the material for 500 000 such houses a year, Anna's Pepparkakor is also an important "housebuilder".
