Innovative solution for cordless data communication

Up to now, according to the Swedish company DataSoft Systems (DSS), using infrared light (IR) for transferring data has often demanded extensive programming. The company has therefore developed and patented a new module containing all the necessary hardware and software to permit easy conversion of serial data to infrared light signals. The converter is said to meet the complicated IrDA world standard for infrared communication. This makes it simple to solve a range of data communication problems without the need for separate IrDA programming.

DSS claims that the module can be used for interference-free data transfer between almost all computer equipment that has a serial interface, such as printers and personal computers.
-IR transfer can replace radio modems and cables, and may be used in environments where radio communication is prohibited or unsuitable, for example in hospitals, aircraft and laboratories, says Risto Laukkanen, DSS Managing Director. Transmissions are not affected by high voltage fields, either.
The module can also be used for data communication using IrDA-compatible GSM telephones, such as the Ericsson SH 888. Data can be transferred from machinery and measuring equipment, even through glass. According to the company, the modules meet the EMC requirements (a European safety standard) covering use in medical, industrial and office environments. Manufacture of the modules takes place within ISO 9002 quality assurance rules.

Can be built in
The communicator is patented throughout the EU and in the USA, and is said to provide fast and reliable data transfer over distances of up to four metres. It was developed for use with hand-held computers, but can also be built in to fixed computers and printers, regardless of the operating system employed, and is easy to adapt to different applications.
-A salesman can for instance transfer orders to the company server by connecting an IR module to his palmtop computer, and then transmitting the information via an IrDA-compatible GSM telephone, explains Risto Laukkanen. Swedish train conductors are currently using a mobile ticket sales system, with cordless communication between a palmtop computer and a ticket printer via our IR module, giving them greater flexibility.
System integrators and system designers use the modules as interfaces between different computer units. The larger electronics distributors, along with manufacturers and distributors of hand-held computers and printers are other important target groups. The manufacturer claims that the modules are compatible with other products on the market that have an IrDA interface, and are therefore easy to install, even by end users.
DSS is gradually building up an international distribution network and is actively seeking agents and distributors.

DataSoft Systems is an engineering company, founded in 1974, which specialises in the use of infrared (IR) technology for data communication. Its business operations consist of support and development on a consultancy basis, and marketing of its in-house developed IR products. Among its clients are some of Sweden's largest companies; SCA, Stora/Enso and SJ, along with the Dutch carrier Transavia Airlines.
