Helping Power Stations Increase Profits
Power stations can improve their profit levels by using a new productivityimprovement programme. The programme, PIP, has been developed by Ramse Consulting Ltd, a Finnish-based firm. It believes that individual power plants can make increased profits from more efficient operation.
"We are so confident that we can get results," says Juha Lamberg, vice president, "that after the costs of the initial consultancy, the remaining implementation work will be tied to the profits a plant makes." He points out that in the energy field, improvements by one or two percent in overall efficiency in a large generating unit can add up to a substantial increase in profit levels. The company has already begun projects involving its PIP process in Finland and is about to extend this work, initially, to the Spanish and Portuguese power industries where it has an established market presence.
The PIP process itself involves taking a close look at the management, operation and technology involved in running an individual plant. Ramse then determines the targets to be achieved along with the resources, tools and skills required to achieve them. Once a client has committed to carrying out the work, the PIP process breaks down into a number of interlacing procedures that affect every aspect of a plant's operation including core functions such as supply, operations, maintenance to support activities such as technology, human resources and procurement.
Considerable expertise
As part of the Finnish PVO group, which constructs and operates power plants, Ramse has built up considerable expertise in providing consultancy services to the energy industry. "PVO runs the most efficient power production in Europe according to independent research," says Juhani Vanhala, Ramse president. Much of the PIP work has developed as a result of Ramse's work on improving efficiency in PVO plants in Finland.
In addition, Ramse can also call on the skills of a number of partners world-wide, should it be necessary. Its partners include such names as James Martin, Walker, Greycon, Cap Gemini, Cooper & Lybrand, Jaakko Poyry
and TT-Technology whose specialisms range from maintenance, to software, logistics and financial systems. In this way, it can offer a wide range of consulting and technical know-how required in modern power plant operation.
