Mobile Internet access via new technology
New technology now lets you carry the Internet around in your pocket. A new system of mobile webcasting has already generated high interest among telecomms operators, including the Swedish company Telia, which has developed new mobile services based on this technology.
InfoCast, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Swedish company Cetronic, began developing its Mobile Webcasting Server two years ago, and is now making collaboration agreements with operators in the USA and other parts of the world. The recent agreement between Telia Mobile AB, Messaging and InfoCast is seen as a breakthrough because parent company Telia is known as an innovative and forward-looking operator. The agreement covers mutual development in server-based services.
'What makes Mobile Webcasting servers interesting is that they offer services that have not existed so far', explains Matz Engman of Telia Mobile AB, Messaging.
'This fits our future strategy for Minicall and is a way of realigning services from paging to cable-free information media'.
Access in seconds
Webcasting, a new method of information capture from the Internet through push technology, has existed for some years but has been restricted to physical computer connections. The novelty of InfoCast's server is that it can rapidly retransmit information from either the Internet or intranets to portable receivers such as pagers or mobile telephones in the form of text messages.
All the receiver needs to do is choose which home page to monitor and input a search request and keyword, plus search conditions and update frequency. The server does not search the whole database or website each pass, but only data that has changed. This reduces overloading and gives access in seconds.
The patented technology opens new possibilities for operators to save costs on cable-free networks in both individual and broadcast services.
