Single-dose Pharmaceutical Packages Can Be Opened Easily With One Hand

Applying medication to hard-to-reach areas, spreading such products as disinfectants, and preventing cross-contamination are now easier, thanks to three single-dose packages designed for pharmaceuticals by Norden Pac International AB. The Kalmar, Sweden-based manufacturer of packaging and filling lines says Dropper, Prep Stick and Unit Dose are tamper-evident and designed for convenient, one-hand application of pharmaceutical products.

Norden Pac, which is the world's largest manufacturer of tube-filling machines, with a 40 percent market share, says its new Dropper is designed to deliver a measured dose into precise or awkward-to-reach areas as well as in cases when part of the patient's body must be held in place. Developed with Smith & Nephew for the administration of wound-healing products, other uses include ear, nose, gynecological and veterinary applications. Products are applied by holding the skittle-shaped, sterilised polypropylene package with one hand, snapping off the tip with one finger and applying pressure to the base of the package with a thumb.
A second package called Prep Stick is designed for such purposes as the application of disinfectants to the skin before surgery. Downward pressure on any hard surface opens two small holes in the end of this flexible, polyethylene tube. It is available with a sponge tip for swabbing liquids on large areas. Baxter, the US distributor of health care products has adopted Prep Stick as an alternative to glass bottle packages of iodine, and Norden Pac says it is ideal for any kind of disinfectant.
The company's multi-purpose package, Unit Dose, is now being introduced for dental and other applications. In professional dental offices, this single-use package prevents cross-contamination due to its tamper-evident lid, which is snapped off by the thumb. The manufacturer says that the package is also suitable for eye washes and such oral liquids as stomach products.
All three packages derive from the company’s packaging concept, which allows customers to develop novel and customised packages in cooperation with Norden. Since the company also delivers the filling lines, development time is said to be shortened significantly.
