Automatic System Reduces Labor Costs in SolidLiquid Separation

Filter presses, which separate solids from liquids and compress them into "cakes", need constant operator attention to ensure complete cake removal from the filter plates. A new Automatic Cake Discharge Detection System (ACDDS) from US manufacturer JWI Inc. minimizes this problem and can, according to the company, lower operator costs by as much as 80 percent.

At critical stages of the cake-extraction process, the ACDDS dislodges cakes by preset cycles of "shifting and bumping." These cycles can be programmed for different types of materials. If, despite these procedures, the automatic system detects incomplete cake removal, a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) stops the filter press operation and sounds an alarm. The PLC can be wired for remote control and monitoring.
"This eliminates the need for constant operator attention and reduces costs by freeing the operator for other duties," says Douglas Wachter, JWI's Director of International Business Development. The ACDDS features corrosion-resistant construction, and is available as optional equipment for the company's new filter presses. It can also be retrofitted to existing systems.
Based in Holland, Michigan, USA, JWI manufactures J-Press recessed chamber and diaphragm (membrane) plate filter presses, J-Mate sludge dryers and Carbolux contaminant removal systems. More than 6,000 of these systems are in use worldwide for solid/liquid separation in municipal waste-water treatment facilities, pigment and dyestuffs plants and in other industries including petrochemicals, mining and pulp and paper. All products conform to ISO 9000 standards and are sold and serviced through local representatives in more than 30 countries.
