Dramatic savings to be gained with DCDC Converters

Replacing secondary battery systems with DC/DC converters can lead to considerable installation, operation and maintenance savings. The PU 1000 launched by Polyamp AB is the latest and largest of the company's range of DC/DC converters that combines reliability with such savings.

DC/DC converters offer two opportunities to save money through the replacement of secondary battery systems. Capital costs coupled with lower maintenance and operational expensive can lead to overall savings of between 30 to 50 per cent of the cost of new installation says the company. This could represent savings of millions of dollars throughout industry as a whole.
DC/DC converters can offer not only provide voltage transformer applications but also isolation, filtering and voltage stabilisation. They have applications in a number of industries including, telecommunications, process, railway, power and heavy industry.

Replacing batteries
Since the early 1990s, DC/DC installations have begun to replace secondary battery systems. DC/DC are now proving themselves a more reliable and cost effective option than batteries, says Peter Kvoch, marketing manager of Polyamp. Demonstrable benefits include:-
* Lower operating and maintenance costs
* Longer system life
* Reduced capital replacement costs ( 30-50% less)
* Longer system lifetime
* Fewer batteries and associated components
* more effective use of primary battery capacity

The PU 1000 can provide output voltages from 24,48,60 to 110V dc using input voltages varying from 24 to 440 V dc. It is certified to a number of key industry standards including the CE mark. The company says, for example, that it tests all its equipment to higher levels than that required by international directives. It has a conventional cooling system with an efficiency of more than 90 per cent. Up to ten such units can be connected in parallel. It is part of a comprehensive range of converters that range from 30 to 1000W output power and voltage inputs from 10 to 750 V dc.
Polyamp is a company founded in Sweden with more than 30 years' experience of DC/DC convertors and exports more than 50% of its production outside Sweden.
Currently the company is seeking to strengthen its distributor network, particularly in the USA and geographic areas where it seeks market opportunities.
