Triple life tubes
save millions for industry
The Swedish company Auralight is now launching its new generation of Long Life fluorescent tubes with full colour rendering and considerably extended economical lifetime. Further technical development of the company's earlier design now guarantees an economical lifetime (IEC 81) of 36,000 hours, three times longer than standard full colour rendering flourescent tubes. This implies large savings, especially for larger users.
Auralight, formerly Luma, has become well-known in Scandinavia as an innovative company. As early as 1980, it was the first company in the world to offer extremely Long Life fluorescent tubes.
‘The first-generation Long Life tubes, of which we have now sold over 25 million, were guaranteed for 30,000 hours economic life. Through technical development of our Long Life concept and production process, we have improved light-loss considerably' said Sales Manager Nils-Eric Bergström.
‘This development, together with extremely low failure rate, means that we can now guarantee an additional 6,000 hours'.
Economical
Large installations, such as hospitals, industry, or major office complexes, can make huge savings.
‘We estimate that the labour cost of changing a fluorescent tube is around three pound. A medium-sized hospital, for example, has around 90,000 tubes. With Long Life tubes, two changes out of three are saved compared with standard tubes, giving a saving of some GBP 540,000 in labour costs alone. It is not only the physical work of changing the tubes that costs, but also the additional costs of reclamation and disposal. With a working cycle of five or six years, the cost-effectiveness of these tubes is excellent'.
New profile
Under the name Luma, Auralight has a very long tradition in the lighting industry. The company was founded in 1930 and began manufacturing fluorescent tubes as early as 1943. Luma has for many years been the leading trade-name in Scandinavia for fluorescent tubes.
The company has recently streamlined its activities and since 1991 has concentrated its efforts on the commodities market. From 1995 onwards, products will be marketed under the tradename Aura.

QUERY REGARDING FIGURES FOR SAVINGS
An increase of 6,000 hours on a tube life of 30,000 hours means 20% longer life, or 16.67% saving on tube changes.
With 90,000 tubes, 16.67% fewer changes means 15,000 in actual numbers. At USD5 per change, this means savings of $75,000 over a complete cycle of changes, not $900,000.
If the savings are being related to standard fluorescent tubes, rather than the earlier versions of Long Life tubes, then this should be stated and their average life should be given. Nothing in this paragraph indicates that comparison is being made with anything but the previous generation of Long Life tubes.
A claim as apparently inaccurate as this could possibly bring legal liability to the client and even to Context and myself if it is allowed to go unchallenged. At the very least, the client could look foolish to readers of the press statement if it is as inaccurate as I believe.
