CAPOD Systems AB specialises in the manufacture of a range of computer-controlled equipment for use in orthopaedics and prosthesis design and manufacture.

Using advanced computer scanning techniques the CAPOD system can create three dimensional images of any part of the body. These images, which can be produced in a number of ways, can then be used to automate the production of orthopaedic or prosthesis aids which are tailored to individual needs. In addition, the system can accept various methods of measurement used in clinics as well as its own scanned techniques.

Target Markets
The concept is to provide advanced manufacturing tools for hospitals and clinics that are both cost effective and highly flexible to cover the enormous variation in patient need regardless of geographical location.

Product range
The heart of CAPOD's product range is a sophisticated computer aided design and manufacturing system that can be linked to a number of sites. This allows a central production facility to be used by several clinics in a region, for example.

Origins
Based on a concept developed at the University of Health and Science in Jönköping in Sweden, the first system came into clinical use in 1989 and today more than 25 systems have been installed world-wide.

Markets
95 per cent of sales are outside Sweden. Largest markets are central Europe, USA and Asia. The company is already establishing a network of agents and representatives around the world as well as setting up subsidiaries in its largest potential markets such as the US.

Ownership:
Karlskoga Invest. This is a venture capital company dedicated to helping support small and medium high technology companies in southern Sweden. This finance company is supported by a number of industrial concerns including Akzo Nobel AB, Bure Utveckling AB and AB Sandvik Teknik.

Karlskoga Invest, with a venture capital of 90 MSEK , already has a portfolio of six engineering companies employing more than 500 people in the region.
