Primalco Ltd. Biotec
General information
Primalco Ltd. Biotec is a business unit of Primalco Ltd., which is part of the Finnish Alko Group with an annual turnover of approximately USD 1 billion. The company’s Biotec business unit is specialized in the production of enzymes for the paper, pulp, textile and animal feed industries. Primalco Biotec is based in Rajamäki, 50 km north of Helsinki and was one of the first enzyme companies in the world to achieve ISO 9002 certification. The company employs 70 people.
Short history
Primalco Ltd., became one of three business units within the Alko Group Oy at the beginning of 1995. The Group comprises Alko Inc., which is specialized in the sale of alcoholic beverages to the retail trade and restaurants in Finland; Arctia Ltd., which operates hotel and restaurants in Finland and abroad; and Primalco Ltd. which manufactures and markets alcoholic beverages, ethanol, starch products, automotive chemicals and other industrial products, and enzymes.
Products
Primalco Ltd. Biotec develops, manufactures and markets a wide range of biotechnical products. The bulk of its range encompasses enzymes for the textile industry (stone washing of denim material and bio-finishing of cellulose based fabrics) animal feed production, paper and pulp industries (bio-bleaching) and environmental applications (composting).
Organization and market
The company is divided into three business units: Feed & Starch (approx. 40% of the total output), Textile (40%) and Pulp & Paper (approx. 20%). The Pulp and Paper business unit exports 50% of its total output with the USA and Canada making up its largest single export markets. The company cooperates with the British ICI in these countries.
