Swedish company lands high-tech orders worth millions of dollars from leading Asian manufacturers

HDTV, or High-Definition TV, is the next generation television system that will satisfy consumer demands for a finer, sharper TV picture close to that on film.
Leading technology in this field can now be found in Japan, Korea and the U.S.A.
To be able to make HDTV screens of high quality, a special shadow mask is necessary. At present, Micronic Laser Systems AB is practically the only company capable of supplying such equipment. In less than a year, the Swedish company has received orders worth more than 30 million U.S. dollars from customers such as Hoya, Sony, and Toshiba in Japan, Goldstar and Samsung in Korea, and Philips in Europe.

"HDTV places stringent demands on the shadow masks found inside the CRTs of TV sets. At present, we are the only company capable of meeting them," says Nils Björk, the president of Micronic Laser Systems AB.
The company manufactures and markets equipment for drawing shadow masks measuring one square meter in area with a precision that is better than one thousandth of a millimeter. With this technology, the company at first aimed at the LCD market (flat liquid-crystal screens for laptop computers), which sought better lithography that would enable the production of larger screens. It was , however, the demands made by the manufacturers of large, flat computer and TV screens that prepared the way for this prominent breakthrough.
More and more companies are now making use of the Swedish technology. To the customers already mentioned can be added additional manufacturers in Europe, China, Taiwan, and the U.S.A.
Micronic Laser Systems AB was established in 1989 when the employees, in collaboration with private investors and a Swedish fund for small-sized companies, purchased the assets of their company. Today, the company has more than 50 employees, twice as many as a year ago, and it is estimated that 20 more people will be added to the rolls during 1996./ins.
